The Cape Metropolitan and rural population is presently estimated to be about 4.5 million people. The Megacity economy of Cape Town is driven by five major areas of focus, which are trade and exports, investment, great events (both sporting and cultural events), tourism and the film industry. This economy includes a wide variety of manufacturing, fishing, agriculture fresh / dried fruits and vegetables, flowers, winter grain, wine production, tourism, movie and stills filming, advertising, clothing, medical technology and higher education. Insurance and financial giants have headquarters here along with a new wave of hi-tech manufacturing companies.

The Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour is the largest timed cycle tour in the world, with +/-35 000 participants competing over a 105km scenic route. There are numerous world-class competitions on the annual Cape Town sporting calendar, including the Two Oceans Marathon. The Soccer World Cup tournament will be hosted by South Africa in 2010.
