Getting to the Western Cape by Air
Flying into Cape Town International, what the airport transfer options are, and when Johannesburg or George Airport is the smarter entry point.
Flying Into Cape Town International and When Johannesburg Works
Choose Your Arrival Airport
Cape Town International (CPT) is the main airport serving the Western Cape. It has 11 direct long haul routes. The choice is not between airports. It is between a direct flight and a domestic hop from Johannesburg (JNB). Fly direct to CPT if your home city offers a non stop route. Fly via JNB if it does not, or if the fare to JNB is significantly lower. For a Garden Route only trip starting in George, fly directly into George Airport (GRJ) and skip CPT entirely.
Direct Routes And Seasonal Gaps
Direct long haul routes from CPT serve Amsterdam, Atlanta, Doha, Dubai, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London Heathrow, Newark, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Singapore, and Washington Dulles. The three North American routes are Atlanta, Newark, and Washington Dulles. Most other North American cities, most European cities outside those five, plus Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia beyond Singapore require a change of plane. Gulf hubs for that change are Doha and Dubai. European hubs include Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and London Heathrow.
Several routes operate seasonally. London Gatwick runs from late October to late March. Newark and Atlanta operate December to March. London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris all have higher frequency in the southern summer and lower in winter. Washington Dulles runs year round but adds frequency in summer. Book the direct flight if it exists for your dates. The extra time and risk of a change of plane is not worth saving a few hundred rand.
When a Johannesburg Connection Makes Sense
The JNB-CPT Corridor
If your home city does not have a direct route to CPT, the standard workaround is a JNB change. The Johannesburg to Cape Town route is the busiest domestic corridor in South Africa, with about 100 to 130 flights per day across five carriers: Airlink, CemAir, FlySafair, Lift, and South African Airways. Flight time is 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.
Book your onward flight 2 to 4 weeks ahead and expect to pay between ZAR 900 and ZAR 2,500 one way. That same ticket bought 0 to 3 days ahead costs ZAR 1,800 to ZAR 4,500. In peak December the range jumps to ZAR 2,500 to ZAR 6,000. The cheapest seats are on low demand Tuesdays and Wednesdays, ZAR 900 to ZAR 1,800. Low cost carriers charge ZAR 200 to ZAR 450 extra for a 23 kg checked bag. Full service carriers include one 23 kg bag in the base fare. Seat pitch on low cost carriers is 28 to 30 inches. On full service it is 31 to 34 inches. If you are tall or have a tight transfer, pay for the full service carrier.
Avoid The Stranding
The failure case is a missed flight. Allow a 90 minute minimum gap at JNB for international to domestic transfers. Allow 60 minutes for domestic to domestic. JNB sits at 1,694 metres elevation, which means longer takeoff rolls and reduced payload on some aircraft, especially in summer heat. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common and can delay JNB CPT flights. Do not book the last flight of the day. If you miss it, the next flight is likely full and you will be waiting until morning.
Driving from Johannesburg to the Western Cape: Who Should Do it
Driving from JNB to CPT via the N1 is 1,400 km and 14 to 16 hours non stop. With a Garden Route detour it stretches to 1,600 to 1,800 km and 18 to 22 hours. Fuel costs ZAR 2,000 to ZAR 3,500 one way. Tolls add ZAR 300 to ZAR 500. A one way car rental drop off fee runs ZAR 1,500 to ZAR 4,000.
This makes sense only in three situations: you want a multi stop itinerary through the Karoo or Garden Route, you are a group of 3 or more splitting costs, or you are travelling outside peak December when JNB CPT flight fares are reasonable. It does not make sense for a solo traveller on a 7 day trip. You will spend two full days behind the windscreen.
That is exactly the mistake the research warns about: assuming the Garden Route is a quick two day drive from Cape Town and back. The full route from Cape Town to Gqeberha is 750 km one way.
| Destination | Airport Code | Frequency |

Arrival Logistics at Cape Town International
CPT is a single terminal building. Domestic and international arrivals both happen on the ground level. After clearing immigration and customs (international only), you walk directly into the arrivals hall. Car rental desks are on the arrivals level. ATMs and currency exchange counters are in both the arrivals and departures halls. Free Wi-Fi is available for 4 hours or 500 MB per device.
The MyCiTi bus route A01 runs from the airport station to Civic Centre station in 20 to 30 minutes, roughly R110. You need a pre loaded MyCiTi card for some routes, though tap and go credit cards work on others. Uber and metered taxis cost R200 to R350 to the City Bowl and take 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. There is no direct rail link from the airport. If you arrive after 11pm, the MyCiTi bus may have stopped running. Budget for an Uber or a rental car pickup.
Rental Cars And Peak Season
A rental car is the dominant mode of transport outside Cape Town's core. The biggest trip up is Google Maps: it routinely underestimates driving times on secondary mountain passes and dirt roads by 30 to 50%. Add a 30% buffer to every drive estimate that leaves the N2 or N1. In peak season from December to February, pre book your car at least 3 months ahead. Walk up rates in December can be double the advance rate, and many categories sell out entirely.
The failure case for a rental car is the Cape Peninsula baboon problem. Never leave windows open or food visible in a parked car. Baboons have learned to open unlocked doors and can strip a car of snacks and valuables in under a minute.
Weather And The Airport
CPT sits at 46 metres elevation on the coast. Strong southeasterly winds in summer can cause delays and go arounds. Winter morning fog can delay early departures. If you have a same day connection to a Garden Route destination or a long haul flight out, book the earliest possible departure out of CPT. Afternoon delays stack, and the wind does not drop until evening.
Your Next Move
Open a flight search for your home city to CPT on your exact dates. If a direct route exists, book it. If not, search JNB to CPT on the same dates and compare total cost and travel time. Then check whether flying into George makes sense for a Garden Route only trip. Do not book a connection with less than 90 minutes at JNB. And do not assume the Garden Route is a weekend drive. The single thing that most often goes wrong here is underestimating the distance and overestimating the time, ending up behind a windscreen for the entire trip.
Common Questions
How far is Cape Town International from the city centre?
About 20 km. The drive takes 20 to 40 minutes by Uber or taxi, 20 to 30 minutes by MyCiTi bus.
Which airlines fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town?
Airlink, CemAir, FlySafair, Lift, and South African Airways. Combined they operate about 100 to 130 flights per day.
Is there a direct train from Cape Town airport to the city?
No. There is no direct rail link. Use the MyCiTi bus, Uber, or a rental car.
How much does a one way JNB to CPT flight cost?
Booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead, ZAR 900 to ZAR 2,500. In peak December, ZAR 2,500 to ZAR 6,000. Low demand Tuesdays and Wednesdays, ZAR 900 to ZAR 1,800.
When should I fly into George instead of Cape Town?
If your Western Cape trip is limited to the Garden Route between Mossel Bay and Knysna. George Airport is 30 to 40 minutes from Mossel Bay. Flying into CPT would add 4 to 5 hours of driving to reach the same area.
